Fire is one of the main threats to the employees and property of any organization. It is estimated that 45% of businesses never reopen after a minor fire. The following information is reprinted with permission from www.eHow.com to help you keep your business safe from fire hazards. Steps: 1. Conduct an office fire drill once every six months. It's a good idea to have one person appointed to "fire safety duty" to plan drills and make sure fire hazards are avoided. 2. Make sure fire extinguishers are mounted every 75 feet, in the vicinity of employees. 3. Keep fire sprinklers clear of clutter. Avoid hanging objects from them, and make sure there's an 18-inch clearance below each sprinkler. 4. Leave fire doors closed. In the event of a fire, a closed fire door can save more of the building from becoming damaged by not allowing the fire to spread. 5. Check all electrical wires and cords for fraying. Use a power strip if you need more than two outlets. 6. Dispose of all broken electrical appliances. 7. Turn off all decorative lights when you leave work. Tips: Make sure you have working smoke detectors in the building. Know two ways out of the building in case of a fire. Warnings: Never take an elevator during a fire - take the stairs. |
